Important events:
Though absent from the best sellers for over a year, Guy Mitchell is
confident of a speedy return. 'These days, my basic goal is to work as
hard as I can and centralise all my efforts on building my career further,'
he said. 'I'm really working at it, and I'm no longer interested in being
a good-time Charlie. I'm also most interested in realising my other major
ambition - to settle down, find myself a wife, and buy myself a ranch,' he
added. 'I'm looking for a girl who likes to dance and laugh, and who loves
children - because I want as many kids as possible!'
American songstress Rosemary Clooney visited Britain this month for TV,
radio and concert dates - including a bill-topping spot at the Palladium.
Miss Clooney delighted her fans with such hits as 'This Ole House', 'Mambo
Italiano' and 'Where Will the Dimple Be'. No mass hysteria or false
emotions, no attempt to palpitate the pulse, but a clever Clooney showing
an audience how they can be nursed, coaxed, humoured and sent home content.
Later, a somewhat cynical Rosemary offered her opinion on America's latest
craze. 'I won't record rock'n'roll', she stated. 'Where's the story value
in those songs? I feel that every good song should tell a story.' The new
style obviously offends her ingrained musical beliefs . . . 'those sax
players, for instance, they don't tune up from year to year, let alone from
day to day, and the singers just have no respect for the basic do-re-mi'.
Regarded by many as home of the blues, Chicago could soon become a centre
for rock'n'roll according to Leonard Chess, the owner of the locally based
Chess and Checker labels. Chess has already enjoyed regional success with
Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, Little Walter and The Moonglows who cut the
original version of the McGuire Sisters' million seller, 'Sincerely' - but
he is convinced that his two latest discoveries 'will change the face of
rock'n'roll'! Both are vocalists who are equally adept as guitarists and
songwriters. Bo Diddley (26), hails from Mississippi, but has been playing
around the clubs of Chicago for several years, while Chuck Berry, (two
years older), is from St Louis. Both their debut discs are rising up the
US R&B chart: Berry is clicking with 'Maybellene" while Diddley's tune is
actually called 'Bo Diddley'!
Released this month is Bill Haley's latest single, 'Razzle Dazzle'/'Two
Hound Dogs'. Meanwhile, London Records are cashing in by issuing 'Green
Tree Boogie' - recorded way back in 1951!
Ken Colyer's Skiffle Group, comprising members of his jazz band, are
currently recording eight titles for Decca. Colyer expects 'skiffle' - a
mixture of American folk and blues styles - to catch on with UK fans.

Other events:
July 2: The theory that Teddy Boy fashions are due to the rising male birth
rate, put forward in the current issue of 'Family Doctor', is discounted in
an editorial in the 'Tailor And Cutter', which says: "The Teddy Boy is
always with us in some strange shape or form, be he called Macaroni, knut,
Johnny, spiv, lary boy, wide boy, Keelie or Charlie Farnes-Barnes. We do
not deny that he dresses as smartly as he can in order to impress the
girls, but we reject the suggestion that in such behaviour there is
something revolutionary."
July 15: The introduction by stages of equal pay for women teachers was
recommended yesterday by the Burnham Main Committee and associated
specialised committees. About 150,000 teachers are affected. Introduction
of equal pay for teachers will be over a period of six years.
July 18: Tactical moves in domestic and foreign policy are believed in
Vienna to lie behind the Hungarian Government's decision to give
provisional freedom to Cardinal Mindszenty, Primate of Hungary. He was
sentenced to life imprisonment in February, 1949, on charges of 'treason'.
Inside Hungary the step has probably been aimed most of all at the
peasantry, who are deeply religious and 65 per cent Roman Catholic. The
timing here is also favourable because work on the Hungarian harvest has
just started.
July 14: Accompanied by the usual macabre incidents, the hanging of Mrs
Ruth Ellis was yesterday carried out at Holloway Gaol. Outside the prison,
drawn by motives too complex to analyse, stood the usual crowd, including
women with prams. As the sinister notices announcing Mrs Ellis's death
were pinned to the gate, the crowd surged forward, craning and jostling.
July 15: Lightning struck Royal Ascot yesterday when the crowd on the
'popular' side of the course, opposite the Royal Box, were sheltering from
a thunder-storm. The storm broke with tropical intensity, just before
4p.m. In the words of one witness, "people were thrown around like
nine-pins, and in a fraction of a second a fairly light-hearted scene
became one of horror and confusion." One woman was killed, and a
seriously-injured man was taken to Heatherwood Hospital, Ascot.
July 26: The mother of a Coventry woman, Elsie May Collins, 29, told the
North Warwickshire Coroner at the Coventry inquest yesterday that her
daughter had never had a serious illness until 10 years ago. Then she
started to go without food because of a "slimming craze which came over
from America." Dr Wilson said that the woman's body was emaciated, with a
complete absence of fat. Death was due to malnutrition and exhaustion
caused by a nervous disease brought on by the slimming.
July 21: The death is announced in Lisbon of Mr. Calouste Sarkis
Gulbenkian, aged 86, who was reputed to be the world's wealthiest man. His
personal fortune, most of which was derived from the oil industry, was
estimated at £300 million.
July 2: A relentless power player, who scarcely made a loose or
thoughtless stroke from the start of things last Monday week, became men's
singles champion at Wimbledon this afternoon. Tony Trabert, as expected,
was the winner, the 12th American to take the crown, and in the final,
watched by Princess Margaret and the Duchess of Kent, he overwhelmed Kurt
Nielsen 6-3, 7-5, 6-1.
July 18: Watched by the greatest crowd ever at a motoring contest in Great
Britain (150,000), Stirling Moss achieved the ambition of his life at
Aintree, Liverpool yesterday. He won the British Grand Prix by a fifth of
a second over Juan Fangio, the world champion. The two silver-bullet
Mercedes-Benz cars were followed over the finish line by another pair from
the same 'stable' - the 'Mercs' of Karl Kling and Pierre Taruffi. The rest
of the field containing Maseratis and Ferraris from Italy, Gordinis from
France, and Vanwalls, Connaughts and Coopers from Britain trailed in behind
the victorious German team.

However, the NME singles reviewer does not concur! He has branded it a 'junior idiot chant . . . strictly from the booby hatch'. If nothing else, rock'n'roll is certainly creating a huge rift between those who like it and those who don't! One day last year, an English teacher at a New York High School set his class the task of writing a poem. Among those handed in was one entitled 'Why Do Fools Fall In Love?' - the work of 13 year-old black pupil Frankie Lymon. The teacher, none too pleased at the boy's apparent precocity, marked the poem and handed it back. He thought he'd heard the last of it ... but within a few months, all America was familiar with it! Lymon had just joined four neighbourhood friends in forming a vocal group - called, logically, The Teenagers - and they were experimenting with a musical version of the poem when George Goldner, the head of Gee Records, happened to hear them. He couldn't get them into the studio fast enough, and 'Why Do Fools Fall In Love' became their first disc. Within weeks of its release in January, it became a hot seller in the States and now it has steadily climbed to the top of the best sellers in Britain. Frankie and his pals plan to fly in and meet their British fans just as soon as they can get time off from school! After breaking all box-office records during its first European run in Dublin, the 'Rock Around The Clock' movie premiered in London on July 20. No matter where he's appearing in America, Elvis Presley telephones his mother in Memphis every afternoon at 3 pm. Is Britain heading for a jazz boom? Currently in the best sellers. 'Experiments With Mice' (Johnny Dankworth) and 'Bad Penny Blues' (Humphrey Lyttelton). In a recent column, John Crosby, the most influential of America's TV and radio journalists, echoed the anxiety of many in the popular music mainstream. Referring to Elvis Presley as an 'unspeakably untalented and vulgar young entertainer', Crosby hoped that this aberration might herald 'the end of rock'n'roll and a return to musical sanity.' 'I mean,' he continued, 'where do you go from Elvis Presley, short of open obscenity, which is against the law?' 'Popular music has been in a tailspin for years now, and I have hopes that with Presley it has touched bottom and will just have to start getting better.' Earlier, in the month Elvis appeared on the Steve Allen Show on which he was instructed by his host not to dance while singing 'Hound Dog'. Since forming his band in 1948, Old Etonian and former Guards officer Humphrey Lyttelton has been popularising the traditional jazz of New Orleans in specialist clubs around London - including his own at 100 Oxford Street "New Musical Express" headlines this month: It's Turned out Mice Again for Johnny Dankworth! Other events: July 25: With a form of ceremony introduced in the 18th Century, the Navy's first experimental guided missile ship, the 8,580-ton Girdle Ness, was commissioned this afternoon. She is similar in design to the United States Navy's first experimental guided missile ship, the Norton Sound. July 11; The House of Lords last night, by 238 votes to 95, refused a second reading of Mr Silverman's Bill for the abolition of the death penalty. July 18: More and more mothers are following the example of the Queen and sending their children to dancing classes. It is fashionable now to start lessons at two years old, and many schools have long waiting lists July 7: Lew Hoad beat Ken Rosewall 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 to win the men's singles championship at Wimbledon today. The champion of Australia and France is now the champion of Wimbledon and if, as seems not unlikely, he goes on to gain the American laurels he will equal the record of Donald Budge in taking all four major lawn tennis titles in one year.

Important events:
A new name to the charts is Russ Hamilton, a 24-year old who sings, plays a
guitar and writes his own songs. Born in Liverpool, the freckled,
tousle-haired youngster was working as a factory cost clerk until last
year, when he became a Redcoat with the Butlin's leisure organisation - so
that he could get some show business experience. He was Uncle Russ to the
kiddy-winkies at the holiday camp in Blackpool. Early this year, he signed
a contract with the Oriole label, and, in storybook fashion, his first disc
romped to No. 2. But the story doesn't end there: American record-buyers
took a liking to Russ too ... but they preferred the flip side of his
record! So the chirpy newcomer has two Top 10 hits -'We Will Make Love' in
Britain, and 'Rainbow' in the States! This summer, he's back on duty at
Butlin's - singing to some 10,000 holidaymakers a week at their Clacton
camp.
Frankie Lymon, one of America's youngest and most successful new recording
stars, has split away from The Teenagers vocal team. Tension began to
develop in London, when Lymon recorded an album without the other members
of the group. Said 14-year old Frankie: 'The headline notices I received
in Britain caused the others to become jealous. Since our return to New
York, the quartet and I have hardly spoken to each other.' Both factions
intend to pursue separate careers, although The Teenagers will undoubtedly
encounter difficulty finding another vocalist as dynamic as Lymon.
Pat Boone refuses to compromise his religious views, which prohibit
physical contact with any woman other than his wife. 20th Century Fox are
respecting his feelings to the extent of writing out all his love scenes
with ShirIey Jones when they begin filming 'April Love'. Pat also has some
pertinent comments about today's rock'n'roll scene. 'I think some of its
exponents are giving it a black eye', he explained recently. 'They are way
off base with their stage contortions. I don't think anything excuses the
suggestive gyrations that some go in for. Why do musicians find it
necessary to get down on the floor, or quiver like a slab of aspic? I
belong to the finger-snapping school myself - that, and a little tapping of
the feet is enough to satisfy my soul ... and it seems to satisfy my
audiences too'.

His live appearances, which always provoke an intense response from the audience - particularly the girls - have improved immeasurably, and his more recent recordings reveal a degree of confidence quite remarkable for a performer so youthful. Sales of his fourth release, "Endless Sleep', have now propelled him into the charts for the first time - much to the glee of his recording manager, Johnny Franz. 'Marty came along on the rock'n'roll wave, but I've always seen more in him than that,' says Franz. 'I believe he's got the kind of lasting talent that can be applied to any sort of song.' High praise indeed - especially when you consider that this time last year, Marty was still working in a South London timber yard! Harry Belafonte's next album will be called 'Belafonte Sings The Blues', on which he performs several Ray Charles originals. Since his tour eighteen months ago, Bill Haley has been completely absent from the UK charts - though he is currently in the US Top 30 with 'Skinny Minnie'. Peggy Lee has waxed the rock'n'roll title which established Little Willie John's career -'Fever'. So they've done it! After two very near misses, The Everly Brothers have achieved their first No. 1 in Britain - with 'All I Have To Do Is Dream'. Raised on country music, the two Kentuckians believe the reason their records have made such an impact is that: 'They are simple, direct and to the point. The kids don't want to have to sit down and decipher a song, or figure it out.' For their current chart-topper, and their previous hits -'Bye Bye Love' and 'Wake Up Little Susie' - Don And Phil have to thank the Nashville songwriting team of Felice and Boudleaux Bryant, whose songs are tailor-made for the boys' distinctive style. It reached the top on both sides of the Atlantic, and has sold well over a million copies, but 'All I Have To Do Is Dream' took only 15 minutes to write! Incidentally, the flip side, 'Claudette', was penned by Texan rockabilly singer Roy Orbison as a tribute to his wife. Following in the footsteps of Elvis, British rock'n'roll star Terry Dene must soon report to Winchester Barracks, where he will join the Kings Royal Rifle Corps for National Service. Originally scheduled for July 7, his call-up has now been deferred until contracted commitments have been completed. In the meantime, Dene has married singing star Edna Savage, after a whirlwind romance which blossomed during a shared variety tour. When the couple return from their honeymoon in Torremolinos, Spain, agent Hyman Zahl plans to present them as 'Mr and Mrs Music'. A statement issued by the Defence Ministry just before 5p.m. said: 'In view of the generally unsettled situation in the Middle East the Government have decided to take certain precautionary measures. These include the alerting of one infantry brigade in this country and of the Parachute Brigade and the 1st Guards Brigade in Cyprus, and the movement of reinforcements from Kenya to Aden and from Aden to the Persian Gulf. July 16: The first 1,700 of more than 5,000 Marines of the United States Sixth Fleet ordered into Lebanon made an uneventful landing at Beirut yesterday. It was America's first direct military intervention in the Middle East. July 28: Prince Charles, the Heir Apparent, who is aged nine, has been created Prince of Wales. Mr Michael Wade, for the management, said yesterday, "This man will be the last Indian to dance at the Scala." The case was brought to light by a woman who complained to him that she was asked to dance by an Indian. One of the staff said that some time after the man was admitted he was recognised as a coloured person in the bar. Twanging away on a chugging opus called 'Peter Gunn', Duane Eddy has crashed into the UK Top 10 - yet his disc is nowhere to be seen on the US chart. The explanation is simple: the number is the theme from a US TV series - about a private eye called Peter Gunn - and was a colossal hit for Ray Anthony earlier in the year. Additionally, Henry Mancini's soundtrack album was America's top seller for eleven weeks. In Britain the melody is still very much of a novelty - hence the rush for Duane's timely version. While Marty Wilde and Craig Douglas fight for supremacy in the UK chart, the original version of 'A Teenager In Love' is keeping New York vocal group Dion & The Belmonts high in the American Top 10. Taking their name from Belmont Avenue, which crosses their neighbourhood, the quartet first demonstrated their prowess on 'I Wonder Why', a year ago. Lead singer Dion DiMucci (19) enjoys water sports and skin-diving, while companions Carlo Mastrangelo and Fred Milano are crazy about clothes. Carlo, for instance, boasts no fewer than 100 shirts! Fourth member, Angelo d'Aleo, is currently out of the picture, doing his military service in the Navy. As their names indicate, all the boys have an Italian heritage. Only recently introduced, Juke Box Jury has quickly become the most popular programme on British television. In Britain, C&W star Johnny Horton has conceded defeat in 'The Battle Of New Orleans' - now a Top Three smash for Lonnie Donegan. Cliff Richard has started work on Expresso Bongo - in which he plays a singer discovered by Laurence Harvey; meanwhile, 'Living Doll' has become his fastest-selling bit. The label of the debut disc by Johnny Kidd & The Pirates says 'Please Don't Touch' - but fans have clearly ignored this caution, purchasing enough copies to thrust it into the UK Top 30! This is good news indeed for 18-year-old Fred Heath, from Willesden, North London. The former leader of a comedy skiffle outfit called The Five Nutters, Heath modified his group to embrace a rockier style - and it so happened that, on one of their first dates, an eye infection compelled him to wear a black patch. This prompted a member of the audience to comment that he resembled a pirate - and it is to this unknown wit that Heath and his pals are indebted for their dashing new name and swashbuckling attire. Incidentally, Heath also wrote his hot-rocking hit ... he obviously has a good eye for a song! Billie Holiday, universally acclaimed as the world's greatest jazz singer, died in the early hours of July 17 at New York's Metropolitan Hotel. Only 44, she had been critically ill with jaundice and heart trouble for several weeks. Other events: July 25: As part of the Post Office mechanisation programme to cut wage costs, reduce the dull, monotonous and heavy manual work, and speed the mails, the public is to be asked to use postal codes to aid high-speed automatic sorting. Everyone in and around the city of Norwich will be given a postal code and asked to use it as the last line of their postal address, said Mr Marples, Post Master-General yesterday. The people would be the first in the world to use a postal code in this way. July 29: Jamaicans went to the polls today to elect a Government for the next five years. More than 800,000 electors were able to vote. Clashes broke out this evening outside the Labour party headquarters in Kingston when a 'raiding party' of People's National party supporters on bicycles swept through the street which was crowded with Labour party voters. Fighting with sticks and stones was broken up by the police. July 21: Sir Ian Jacob, Director General of the B.B.C. since 1952, will retire at the end of the year. He will be succeeded by Mr Hugh Carleton Greene, a brother of the novelist Graham Greene July 7: More than 50 officers and members of the crew of the cargo liner 'Calpean Star', 14,232 tons, staged a sit-down strike aboard the ship at Liverpool yesterday. Between the decks, an albatross, bird of ill omen to seafarers, lay dead in its cage. The crew complained of misfortunes during the voyage. The albatross, captured in Bird Island, South Georgia, was being taken to a zoo in Germany. July 3: Yves St Laurent, the young designer for the House of Dior said today, 24-hours before his fashions are presented, that they will bring a 'new look' which will make women show their knee-cap. Not since the late Christian Dior dropped skirts to near the ankle in 1947 has such a drastic change been made. July 6: Wimbledon Finals results: Men's singles; Alex Olmedo (U.S.) bt Rod Laver (Australia) 6-4, 6-3, 6-4. Women's singles: Maria Bueno (Brazil) by Darlene Hard (U.S.) 6-4, 6-3

'How I wish I could make people see how much hard work the boys really put in. From The Rebels to the sound engineer, and from the extra musicians to the guys whose job it is to keep us supplied with coffee and hot dogs, we are all working to one end.' 'I don't care if my discs hit the top spot or if they are never seen in the charts, so long as the collectors who appreciate rhythm and blues buy them. When the real collectors lose interest, man, I'll retire.' - Fats Domino Johnny Kidd & The Pirates have vibrated' into the UK charts with 'Shakin' All Over'- a record which many insist has come close to wiping away the memory of Cliff Richard's 'Move It' as the greatest-ever British-made rock'n'roll single. Kidd's self-penned follow-up to his last year hit 'Please Don't Touch' again employs a 'shakin'' theme, but it's quite unlike other record in the charts. With an aggressive visual image as unmistakable as his R&B-rooted voice - black patch over his left eye, matching leather waistcoat and thighboots, plus a cutlass - Kidd stands apart from the numerous Elvis imitators who make up the British rock'n'roll scene. Similarly, his guitarists steer away from Shadows-style 'tremeloing' and Duane Eddy elastic-band 'twang', preferring a hard-edged black blues sound. For 'Shakin' All Over', top session guitar-picker Joe Moretti was responsible for that that hackle-raising guitar lick. Regarding who influenced Kidd's highly-personalised style, all he had to say was: 'I just open my mouth and sing - that's all there is to it!' A new decade - a new sound!!!! The Wobble Board, invention of bearded Australian TV presenter and cartoonist Rolf Harris is the featured instrument on his new record 'Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport', which has wobbled straight into the UK charts at No. 15. How to play the Wobble Board! Step 1: Locate a piece of hardboard 3ft long by 18in wide. Step 2: Grasp both ends of the board firmly in your hands. Step 3: With a flick of the wrists bend the board up and down to produce a rhythmic 'Whoolp' and 'Beloop'. Step 4: immediately become rich and famous. Widower Vernon Presley (Elvis' Dad) has married divorcee Dee Elliott. Hank Ballard & The Midnighters launch 'The Twist'. Bing Crosby has been presented with a platinum disc to commemorate record sales of 200 million. Only six months after it commenced, Marty Wilde's two year, £100,000 contract with impresario Harold Fielding is to be terminated in September, by mutual agreement. Though both 'Hello Mary Lou' and 'Travelin' Man' have repeated their recent Stateside chart success in the UK, Ricky is confronted by the knowledge that he has yet to build up the kind of fan loyalty he enjoys at home. 'Maybe you've been wondering what has been happening to me during the past 18 months. The fact that my records haven't been doing any too well on your side of the Atlantic came as something of a disappointment to me, I must admit, bearing in mind the luck I had with several of my earlier releases. A lot of people have suggested it was due to the return of Elvis Presley from his period of Army service - and I suppose there might be something in that. But you know, I have never really placed myself in the category of Elvis - and I can't honestly imagine that I was regarded as his deputy during his absence. I have no doubt, though, that when Elvis came back from Germany, the competition was rather tough for all young male singers.' Self-styled authority Pat Boone has written a 'serious' book on what young people should know about Communism and Democracy Memphis soul act, The Mar-Keys have charted with 'Last Night'. The Twist is reported to be the happening dance craze around Philadelphia. Liverpool live-wire Bill Harry has published the first-ever edition of his alternative pop music paper, Mersey Beat. Devoted almost entirely to the vast local pop scene, the debut edition features the article, 'Being a Short Diversion on the Dubious Origins of Beatles', accompanied by a 'translated from the John Lennon' by-line. Lennon is a member of The Beatles, one of Liverpool's most popular home-grown groups. "New Musical Express" headlines this month: Should the BBC have Axed Perry Como? With a line-up comprised of Mick Jagger (vocals), Keith Richards and Elmo

Paul Anka, now 21, has the legal freedom to spend the hundreds of thousands
of dollars he has been earning for years as a minor! Some measure of how
much that may be can be gauged from the fact that not only has Anka been
awarded 20 gold discs (each in recognition for over one million records
sold), but that many of them, like 'Lonely Boy' and 'Puppy Love', were
self-penned. Biggest of all has been 'Diana'. This song is said to have
been covered 320 times in 22 countries in the past six years, total sales
of such recordings being close to ten million records, while Paul's own
sales world-wide stand at more than 30 million. Additionally, his current
deal with RCA is said to be worth a minimum of one million dollars over the
next five years. Coupled to this, twangy guitar man Duane Eddy has
recently signed to Anka's production company Camay, which is distributed by
RCA-Victor. His first disc for Anka/Camay is 'Deep In The Heart Of Texas'
and shows a return to his familiar hit formula. Meanwhile, Anka - whose
upcoming single is 'Eso Beso' - has had one of his paintings accepted by
the United Nations Art Club. It is to be hung in the General Assembly
building in New York prior to being auctioned off by UNICEF.
Connie Francis has slipped behind the Iron Curtain to represent the USA at

With both the Twist and trad jazz taking sales away from the previously
rock'n'roll dominated singles market, NME's analysis of the paper's weekly
charts for the period January 1 - June 30 makes compulsive reading (it says
here). Looking at the Top 10 positions, Elvis again is secure at No 1
followed by Cliff Richard, but with Chubby Checker fast gaining ground at
No. 3. There no other US artists in this top half of the results. Trad
jazz is represented by Mr Acker Bilk at No. 4 and Kenny Ball at No. 7. The
remaining best-sellers are: Karl Denver (No. 5), Billy Fury (No. 7), The
Shadows (No. 8), Eden Kane (No. 9) and Helen Shapiro who, at No. 10 is a
full eleven places ahead of her closest female rival, Brenda Lee.
